Please read the following frequently asked questions and safety guidelines prior to your arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Welcome Home Animal Sanctuary a Petting Zoo? No. Unlike petting zoos, which prioritize human entertainment and profit, Welcome Home Sanctuary is a nonprofit haven for animals rescued from abuse, slaughter, neglect, or who have special needs. Here, these animals find refuge, where their happiness and safety are paramount. Our residents enjoy the autonomy to choose their interactions with visitors, ensuring their well-being and comfort.

What Kind of Clothing and Shoes Should I Wear? We highly recommend closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Hats and sunglasses may be wise, especially on very sunny days.

Can I Bring My Furry Companion? No. For the safety and comfort of the Welcome Home residents, we ask that you leave your animal friends at home.

Can I Bring Snacks for the Animals? No. Please do not bring food from home for the animals.

Is There a Restroom Available? Yes, we have a port-a-potty available for visitors.

Where Do I Park? Volunteers will direct you upon arrival at the front gates. Parking is typically directed into the available space within the sanctuary property first to minimize cars parked on the shared dirt road, out of consideration for neighbors and other vehicles.

Animal Safety Guidelines

Please be respectful towards every animal resident. Remember that they can become stressed, tired, startled, excited, or confused, just like us. Unlike us, they can’t communicate their concerns or intentions as easily, so we are counting on you to be aware of your surroundings and look out for potential danger.

  • Watch Your Surroundings: Be aware of any animals that may walk up behind you or near your legs.

  • No Hand Feeding Pigs: Pigs should not be fed by hand, period.

  • Respect Their Size: Remember, the animal residents can be very strong and very heavy. They move very quickly and some of them have horns. Do not try to move them or grab them yourself. Move out of their way if the situation becomes unsafe or uncertain.

  • Do Not Cross Gates or Fences: Be safe and stay on the visitor side of gates unless a volunteer assists you and remains with you.

  • Do Not Feed the Animals: The only time you may feed an animal is with the assistance of a volunteer. This is a safety precaution for both humans and animals.

If you have any questions or concerns during a Welcome Walk, or you don’t feel safe, please alert one of our volunteers right away!
